Healthy Vegan Mayonnaise

This healthy vegan mayonnaise is the perfect light and oil-free addition to your next veggie filled sandwich! And who doesn’t love a good sandwich?! Mayonnaise is definitely considered a classic spread and kitchen staple, but I think it’s finally time to ditch the unhealthy store bought versions (both vegan and non-vegan). Instead, let’s make this healthy vegan mayonnaise!


I actually haven’t even bought mayonnaise in what seems like years. It always just seemed too calorie dense, and the vegan options usually tend to be a bit on the expensive side. But recently, I was experimenting with a recipe that really needed the creamy consistency of mayo to take it to the next level. So, that’s how this homemade alternative came into existence. And for those of us who are health conscious, it’s great to know that it’s cholesterol-free and pretty much fat free! (Check out the nutrition facts on a box of silken tofu).


Thanks to the magic of tofu, this spreadable and creamy healthy vegan mayonnaise is delicious! It’s perfect in pasta salads, mixed into chickpeas, spread on sandwiches, or used as a dressing base. And the list just goes on. Basically, you can substitute this mayo just about anywhere you would use the conventional version! And you know what else is awesome!? There’s no disposable jar. Just another great way to reduce kitchen waste one step at a time!


Another plus is that this healthy vegan mayo is sooo much less calorie dense than the regular kind. Definitely a bonus in my book! It’s actually funny, but I initially felt a little bit weird about licking off the spoon, because who cleans off a spoon covered in mayo? But then I remembered, it’s just tofu! No calorie overload here, so go ahead and spread it on thick 🙂


I definitely recommend trying this healthy vegan mayonnaise recipe and ditching the store bought varieties! It’s ridiculously easy to make and so much healthier than the store bought versions. Plus, you’ll feel so accomplished making your own condiments. So what’s not to love?!?

Perfectly creamy and spreadable, this healthy vegan mayonnaise is easy to make and oil free!

Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: Gluten Free, Oil Free, Vegan
Servings: 1 jar
  • 1 12 oz pack (about 1 cup) silken tofu
  • 1/3 cup soy milk
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp salt, or less to taste
  • 1/4 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  1. Using a blender, add all of the ingredients and blend until completely smooth. 

  2. Store the mayonnaise in an airtight glass jar in the refrigerator for up to a week. Allow to chill before using.  

Recipe Notes
  • If you prefer a slightly thicker consistency, only add 1/4 cup soy milk. 
  • This mayonnaise could easily be adapted by adding chipotle spices, fresh garlic, or any other of your favorite spices.
  • Enjoy on sandwiches, as a dressing base, in pasta salad, or in any other recipe that uses mayonnaise.
